How to find the right Foundation shade online

If you're a person who wears make up, you know how hard it is to find your perfect foundation shade. It's hard enough going through all the testers at Ulta or Sephora, but now we can't use those because of regulations put in place because of COVID-19.

Due to the pandemic many makeup users have been shopping for their makeup products online, but it's not the same when you can't test out the product to see if it is match or not. Here on some steps to make choosing a foundation shade online a bit easier for you.

  1. Know your skin

Choosing the right foundation isn't just about choosing the right color. It's also about finding the right formula for your skin. Knowing your skin and what concerns you have about it are factors in determining what foundation you should get. If one of your concerns is an oily T-zone, you might want to go for a long-wear, mat foundation, and definitely avoid oil-based ones; look for the ones that are water-based. If your concern is dry skin, look for foundations that have a luminous and hydrating formula. try looking for one that contain added antioxidants and nutrients to up moisture levels.

2. Identify your undertone!

Your undertone is very important when it comes to choosing a shade! Identify your undertone by looking at charts like this one:

Skin with blue veins sits on the cooler side of the spectrum, whereas skin with a greenish veins is warm, and those who consider themselves to sit in between the two would be neutral-toned.

3. Decide what coverage you want

Some makeup users prefer a full-coverage foundation to help cover up any blemishes while other's opt for a lightweight coverage that gives off a more natural look. or you can go for a a medium coverage foundation that can be used for a variety of finishes determined by how much product you use.

4. Finding a shade.

Don't be afraid to mix shades! Our skin changes tones through out the year so one shade wont work for you year round. Mixing shade colors can not only make a better fit but by also adding primers of moisturizer your finished look can change. A good rule of thumb when you're stuck between two similar shades, chose the the lighter one. you can always add bronzer to deepen the shade. It's easier to darken up a shade than it is to lighten it!

5. Ask the internet

The internet is full of make-up professionals who can help answer your make up questions. Whether it be questions about the brand of foundation or questions regarding what's best for your skin, there are countless articles that can point you in the right direction. You can also find foundation swatches that can help with your shade choosing!

Choosing a shade is more than just looking at the foundation bottle and think "It's close enough". It's important to take these steps before going with a foundation. That is, if you want to avoid having you face look a completely different tone than your actual skin!
